Balance Bike Design
Partners: Oleski Babi & Sebastion Krnic
This project aims to create a balance bike for a three- to a five-year-old child. The segment selected is the racing balance bike category, focusing on performance, durability, and safety.
Design Process
The design prioritizes ergonomics and fit of different size children while they ride on the balance bike.
A study of children in various racing postures is considered for best riding comfort - such as when a child takes a stride while pushing forward and tucks in to stay aerodynamic.
Prototyping
Research is done for sustainable yet cost-effective materials for the bike frame so that the bike is relatively affordable, lightweight, and durable. The ease of manufacturing and compatibility with aftermarket components is also considered.
The visual appeal of the bike design is based on Italian sports cars and the idea of motorsports.
Final Design
The model is 1:2 scale, in a matte red hero colour with gloss black accents on the bike components. Pink foam was shaped to create the form of the bike frame. 3D printing methods make the handlebar, stem, rims, hubs, saddle, and seat post.
A full-scale bike is made of an aluminum/magnesium cast frame—ergonomics based on the adjustability of touch points such as the saddle and handlebar height.
